What is an EMC?

An Export Management Company (EMC) is an independent company that acts as your export sales department. It is one of the quickest and most cost-effective ways to introduce your products to a new market.

What an EMC does

An EMC appoints and supports distributors in overseas markets on your behalf. It can combine products from several manufacturers to meet a large buyer’s needs — which is why many overseas chains use EMCs as a main sourcing route. It also feeds market information back to you, on product changes, new product ideas and warranty programmes.

Services on your behalf

  • Researching and analysing potential markets
  • Finding and appointing overseas distributors
  • Marketing, promotion and international exhibitions
  • International sales, contracts and financing
  • Banking, insurance and international transport
  • Export documents for each country’s import rules
  • After-sales, customer service, technical support and warranty coordination

How EMCs work

An EMC usually works in one of two ways: it earns a commission on sales, or it buys the goods from the manufacturer and resells them. Commission work suits manufacturers who have no international department — or who have one but don’t want to expand it to cover every market. Because an EMC already has the network, it can promote your products at a lower cost than building your own channels.

Why choose an EMC

Faster export sales

An EMC already has agents, distributors and contacts in place, so you sell sooner.

Time and specialist knowledge

It handles quotations, orders and shipping, with deep knowledge of the target market.

Paid on results

An EMC’s profit depends on selling your product — it is motivated to sell more.

Lower risk

Test whether there is demand for your product before investing in your own channels.

The process

  1. Understand your business We discuss your products, processes and goals.
  2. Assess barriers and requirements We outline every regulatory, logistical and commercial step.
  3. Match you with buyers We connect you with distributors and buyers in the target region.
  4. Manage the flow We set up and run the systems that move your product to the buyer — and keep you informed at every stage.

What makes the partnership work

An EMC is only as strong as its principal allows it to be. The best results come with:

  • Full product knowledge and technical support for quotations
  • Competitive pricing and payment terms
  • Territory protection, and referral of any direct enquiries to the EMC
  • A fair representation agreement with enough time to develop the market
  • Open communication between both sides
